PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide)
PDRN, short for polydeoxyribonucleotide, is a mixture of DNA fragments, usually purified from salmon or trout, used in skincare and in injectable skin-booster procedures. In a topical product it works as a hydrating, skin-conditioning ingredient for a smoother, brighter-looking surface.

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide: a mixture of DNA fragments of varying length. It is most often extracted and purified from the reproductive cells of salmon or trout, which is why products containing it are frequently marketed as "salmon DNA". It became one of the best-known ingredients in Korean skincare in the 2020s, and is now central to the conversation about glass skin.
Injectable and topical are different things
PDRN reaches skin in two very different ways, and most of the confusion around it comes from mixing them up.
- Injectable PDRN is a medical-aesthetic procedure, often called a skin booster, performed by clinicians. Most of the published research on PDRN concerns injected or medical use, much of it in tissue-repair settings.
- Topical PDRN is a cosmetic ingredient in serums and creams, applied to the surface of the skin. In that role it is a hydrating, skin-conditioning ingredient.
Claims made about injections should not be borrowed for a bottle. A serum is not a needle, and any brand implying otherwise is relying on the reader not knowing the difference.
Reading "salmon DNA" marketing
Because the ingredient is fashionable, it appears on a lot of front labels that the ingredient list does not support. The test is simple: look for PDRN or a DNA-derived ingredient named on the full ingredient list, not just in the headline. A product that mentions salmon on the box but buries it at the end of the list, or does not name it at all, is selling the word. The longer guide is real PDRN versus salmon DNA marketing.
What it actually does topically
Used consistently as part of a routine, a PDRN serum supports hydration and a smoother, brighter-looking surface over a period of weeks. It is a finishing step, not a foundation: it works alongside a moisturizer and daily sunscreen, not instead of them. How it compares with the other popular actives is in retinol versus peptides.
What is changeable
The skin readings that respond to a routine are texture, tone evenness, redness and the under-eye area — the four the free face scan measures on your device. Those are the honest targets for PDRN and for skincare in general: not a different face, but the same one looking hydrated, even and rested. Where it fits in a full routine for men is set out in glass skin for men, and our own version is the PDRN brightening serum, with PDRN named on the ingredient list.
