Looksmaxxing
Looksmaxxing is the deliberate practice of improving your appearance — usually through skin, body composition, sleep, hair and grooming, and at the far end through surgery. The word comes from online forums; the practice is ordinary self-care with a vocabulary attached.

Looksmaxxing means working deliberately to look as good as you can. "Maxxing" is forum slang for maximising one attribute, and "looks" is the attribute. The word is new. The idea behind it — taking care of your skin, your body and how you present yourself — is not.
Where the word came from
The term grew out of the same online forums that produced the PSL scale during the 2010s, and reached a much wider audience through short-form video in the 2020s. It arrived carrying that forum's assumptions: that appearance can be ranked, that the ranking is mostly bone, and that bone is destiny. The word has since outgrown its origins. Most people searching for it now want a skincare routine and a training plan, not a worldview.
Softmaxxing and hardmaxxing
The vocabulary splits the field in two.
- Softmaxxing — non-invasive changes: skincare, body composition, sleep, haircut, grooming, posture and clothes. Cheap, reversible, and where nearly all of the visible return is.
- Hardmaxxing — invasive or permanent changes: surgery, injectables, hair transplants. The forum version also takes in practices like bone smashing, which are unsafe and have no evidence behind them.
The longer comparison, framed as where the first $100 should go, is softmaxxing versus hardmaxxing.
What it actually measures
Looksmaxxing is not a measurement, but the communities around it measure constantly: tiers on the PSL scale, ratios like fWHR, angles like canthal tilt. Most of those numbers describe facial structure, which is set in adults. That is the trap in the vocabulary. It spends its attention on the inputs nobody can change and skips the ones that move. Two photographs of the same face differ more with body fat, sleep, skin condition, lighting and lens than with anything an angle on a forum diagram captures.
The honest version
Stripped of the forum framing, looksmaxxing is a priority list, and the order runs roughly like this:
- Body composition. Lower body fat is usually the biggest single non-surgical change to how the jaw and cheekbones read. Start with body recomp basics.
- Skin. Texture, tone and hydration are read before structure is. The beginner routine is four steps.
- Sleep. It shows in the eye area first — sleepmaxxing.
- Hair and grooming. A cut that suits your head shape, a kept beard or a clean shave, brows tidied rather than reshaped.
None of that promises a rating, and none of it needs one. The point is to be the best-kept version of the face you already have, for your own confidence and self-respect, not to climb a forum's ladder. The whole thing is set out end to end in the complete looksmaxxing guide, and if you want a starting read on your skin, the free face scan runs entirely on your device.
