
Reishi and Cordyceps: The Two Mushrooms Worth Knowing
The one label distinction that decides whether a mushroom supplement is real, and an honest read on the two mushrooms most people should start with.
The functional mushroom aisle has a problem that almost nobody buying from it knows about. Two products can both say "reishi 1,000mg" on the front, cost within a few dollars of each other, and contain materially different things. One is mushroom. The other is mostly grain.
That is not a conspiracy theory, it is a manufacturing fact, and once you understand it you can sort the entire category in about ninety seconds. It is the single most important thing to know about buying mushroom supplements, and it is more important than which mushroom you pick.
So this guide does two jobs. First, the label distinction that decides whether your product is real. Second, an honest account of the two mushrooms actually worth your money for most people: reishi in the evening, cordyceps in the morning. Lion's mane and chaga and turkey tail all have their advocates, but if you are starting from zero, these two have the clearest use cases and the least hand-waving attached.
Fruiting body vs mycelium on grain
Start here, because nothing else on the label matters if you get this wrong.
A mushroom, the thing you picture, is the fruiting body. It is the reproductive structure the organism pushes up when conditions are right. It is where the compounds people care about are most concentrated, and it is what centuries of traditional use and most of the human research refer to.
Mycelium is the root-like network the fungus grows through its substrate. It is a real part of the organism. The issue is not mycelium itself, it is how mycelium is produced commercially in North America: grown on a bed of sterilized grain, usually brown rice or oats, in a bag, and then harvested as a single mass, because you cannot separate the fine mycelial threads from the grain they have colonized. The grain gets dried and milled along with the mycelium.
The result is a powder that is largely grain by weight. Estimates vary and manufacturers dispute the numbers, but analyses have commonly found such products running well over half starch. On the label it will appear as "mushroom mycelial biomass," "myceliated brown rice," or simply "organic reishi (mycelium)."
Two things follow.
The milligram number on the front becomes meaningless. 1,000mg of myceliated grain is not 1,000mg of mushroom. It is 1,000mg of a mixture whose composition the label will not tell you.
The starch shows up in testing. Which is exactly why the next section exists, and why the industry has a preferred number that hides the problem.
Fruiting body is grown to maturity, harvested, dried and extracted. It costs more to produce, takes longer, and is what you want. A good label says "fruiting body" explicitly. A label that says nothing is telling you something.
Beta-glucans, polysaccharides, and the number swap
Here is the trick, and it is genuinely clever, which is why it works so well.
Beta-glucans are the polysaccharides in mushrooms that most of the research centers on. They are the compounds people are actually buying. So a good label tells you what percentage of the product is beta-glucan, commonly 20 percent or higher for a decent hot water extract of fruiting body.
But "polysaccharide" is a much broader category, and it includes starch. Starch is a polysaccharide. So a mycelium-on-grain product can honestly print "50% polysaccharides" on the panel while most of that number is the rice it grew on. The claim is technically true and practically worthless.
The rule is short. Beta-glucan percentage is the real number. Polysaccharide percentage is the number people print when the real number is embarrassing. If a label gives you polysaccharides instead of beta-glucans, assume you know why.
While you are there, check for an extract ratio too. Mushroom cell walls are chitin, which humans do not digest well, so raw powdered mushroom gives up its compounds poorly. Hot water extraction is the standard method and the one used in most research. A ratio like 8:1 tells you how concentrated the extract is. Dual extraction, hot water plus alcohol, is worth a little more for reishi specifically, because some of reishi's compounds are not water soluble.
Reishi, honestly
Ganoderma lucidum. A hard, woody, bitter shelf fungus that nobody eats for pleasure. It has the longest documented traditional use of any of these, and in modern supplement terms it lives firmly in the evening.
What it is studied for: supporting the body's stress response and helping maintain restful sleep. That is the honest scope. Reishi is not a sedative, it does not knock you out, and it will not rescue a bad sleep schedule. What people consistently describe is subtler, a sense of settling rather than switching off, which is roughly what you would expect from something in the same conceptual family as ashwagandha.
Reishi also comes up constantly in immune conversations. Be careful with what you read there. Much of the research is preclinical, in cell cultures and animals, and a great deal of the most cited work concerns clinical contexts that have nothing to do with a wellness supplement. The defensible statement for a healthy adult is that reishi is studied for supporting normal immune function. Anything stronger than that is somebody else's copy, not ours.
The taste is genuinely unpleasant, which is why so much reishi is sold as capsules or as reishi gummies, and it is also part of why the gummy honesty section below exists.
Cordyceps, honestly
Cordyceps militaris, in practice. You will see Cordyceps sinensis on labels and in stories about Tibetan runners, but wild sinensis is a caterpillar-parasitizing fungus so scarce it trades by the gram at prices no supplement company is paying. What is in your bottle is either cultivated militaris, which is a legitimate and well characterized species, or a mycelial product called CS-4. Militaris fruiting body is the one to want.
What it is studied for: supporting energy and exercise performance. The human research here is real but modest, mostly small trials looking at measures like time to exhaustion and oxygen utilization during exercise, with the clearest signals in older adults and untrained subjects and much murkier results in trained athletes. Effect sizes are small. Several trials show nothing.
So the honest pitch for cordyceps is not "pre-workout in a capsule." It is a morning support ingredient with a plausible and lightly evidenced link to energy and endurance, which stacks sensibly with the things that actually drive performance. If you want the ingredient with the strongest performance evidence on this site, that is creatine, and it is not close. Cordyceps is a complement to that, not a competitor.
Practically, cordyceps has a mild stimulant character for some people, without caffeine's edge. Which brings us to timing.
Why reishi is an evening thing and cordyceps a morning thing
This is the easiest part of the whole category to get right, and people get it backward constantly.
Reishi at night. Its studied territory is calm and sleep. Taking it at 8am gets you nothing you can use and wastes the one window where it might do something you notice. Thirty to sixty minutes before bed is the standard pattern.
Cordyceps in the morning, or thirty to forty-five minutes before training. Its territory is energy and exercise output, and a subset of people find it makes falling asleep harder if they take it late. Morning solves both problems.
Taking both is fine and common. Cordyceps with breakfast, reishi before bed. That is the whole protocol, and it is one of the rare cases where timing genuinely matters rather than being a marketing flourish. The honest part about gummies
We sell mushroom gummies, so this section costs us something, and it is still worth writing.
A gummy is a small object. Once you account for the pectin or gelatin, the sweetener, the acid and the flavor, there is not much room left for active ingredient. That is a physical constraint, not a formulation choice. It means gummies in every category, not just mushrooms, tend to be dosed lower than the equivalent capsule.
So the honest comparison looks like this. If you want the highest possible dose of a concentrated dual extract per serving, buy capsules or bulk extract powder. That is the format that can carry it. Gummies win on a different axis entirely: they taste fine, reishi in particular is genuinely foul to swallow otherwise, and they get taken. A capsule you skip four nights a week is dosed at zero.
Compliance is not a small factor with mushrooms, because the effects here are cumulative and subtle rather than acute. Consistency over eight weeks beats a higher dose you abandon in week two. That is a real argument for gummies, and it is the only one we will make for them.
What you should still demand from a gummy: the extract weight per gummy stated clearly, the serving size stated in gummies, fruiting body named, and the sugar per serving printed where you can see it. If a gummy label gives you a mushroom name and a serving size and nothing else, it is candy with a theme.
What to look for on the label
- "Fruiting body," stated explicitly. Not "mycelial biomass," not "myceliated brown rice," not silence.
- Beta-glucan percentage, not polysaccharide percentage. This is the number that separates a real extract from a starch product.
- An extract ratio, such as 8:1, and ideally the extraction method. Hot water for both, dual extraction as a bonus for reishi.
- The species, in Latin. Ganoderma lucidum. Cordyceps militaris. If a cordyceps product claims sinensis, be skeptical, because genuine wild sinensis is one of the most expensive biological materials on earth.
- Milligrams of extract per serving, and how many capsules or gummies a serving is.
- No proprietary blend. The ten-mushroom blend is the classic way to make one bottle sound comprehensive while giving you a token amount of each. Two mushrooms dosed properly beats ten dosed decoratively.
- Third-party testing, including heavy metals. Fungi are efficient accumulators, which is exactly why substrate and testing matter.
How to take it
Dose. For a hot water extract of fruiting body, common daily ranges land around 1,000mg to 2,000mg for reishi and 1,000mg to 3,000mg for cordyceps. Those are extract weights, not raw mushroom weights, and they are only meaningful alongside a beta-glucan figure. For gummies, follow the serving on the pack and check the extract weight rather than assuming.
Timing. Cordyceps in the morning or before training. Reishi in the evening, thirty to sixty minutes before bed. Do not swap them.
Daily, not occasionally. These are not acute-effect ingredients. The reasonable evaluation window is eight to twelve weeks of consistent use.
With or without food, either is fine. Extracts are generally easy on the stomach, which is one thing this category has going for it over berberine.
Talk to your physician first if you take anticoagulants or antiplatelet medication, are on immunosuppressants, have an autoimmune condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have surgery scheduled. Reishi in particular has been reported to affect platelet function, and mushrooms with immune-modulating activity deserve a conversation if your immune system is being medically managed.
A realistic timeline
Week one: nothing measurable. Some people report that reishi makes the first few nights feel easier, which may be real and may be novelty.
Weeks two to four: if reishi is doing something for you, this is where it tends to appear, and it appears as slightly easier sleep onset rather than sedation. Cordyceps is harder to read, because training progress confounds everything. If you want an honest answer on cordyceps, do not change your program while you evaluate it.
Weeks eight to twelve: decision point. If you have taken a properly specified fruiting body extract daily for twelve weeks and cannot tell any difference, that is a legitimate result. Stop buying it. A brand that treats a null result as your failure rather than the product's is a brand selling you a sunk cost.
