Under Eye Patches: What They Actually Do (and When to Use Them)

What under eye patches actually do

A patch is an occlusive: it holds a serum, usually humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, against the skin and stops it evaporating while you wear it. Fifteen minutes of that plumps the look of the under eye area with water, and the cooling effect calms the look of morning puffiness. The result is real and it is temporary, on the order of hours. That is not a flaw. It is the product working as designed.

When patches beat everything else

• The morning after a short night, when you need to look assembled by 9am.
• Before an event, a shoot, or a date, as the last step while you get dressed.
• Post-flight, when travel and cabin air have done their thing to your face.

Keep them in the fridge. A cold patch does everything a room temperature one does, faster.

How to use them right

1. Cleanse first. A patch over the day's oil is a patch doing nothing.
2. Place the wide end toward your temple, sitting on the orbital bone, not touching the lash line.
3. Fifteen to twenty minutes. Longer does not do more; once the patch dries it starts pulling moisture back out.
4. Tap the leftover serum in, then finish with your usual moisturizer or eye product.

What to look for when you buy a pack

Ignore the gold foil, it is decoration. Read for humectants high on the ingredient list, peptides if the pack has them, and no fragrance, because the under eye is where fragrance stings first.
